Soul music, a combination of rhythm & blues and gospel music, began in the late 1950s in the U.S. and hit its stride with the advent of the Motown label in Detroit. With its emphasis on dance rhythms and vocals, it became the music for "dancin' & singin' in the street." Now seven Chicago natives, all children of the soul era, bring you their authentic soul sound with Soul Cookin', featuring outstanding vocals on all the great sounds of the Motown era and beyond.
These musicians have over 25 years of solid professional experience, with a powerhouse rhythm section built from some of Chicago's top musicians. Bass player Kirk Davis provides the low end, both musically and vocally. Working under Chicago's famous Chess Records, RCA and others, Kirk has performed with The Dimensions, Donny Hathaway and other R&B greats. Drummer Kenny Coleman is one of Chicago's most sought after jazz and blues percussionists, working as a session player, composer and producer for over 20 years. His extensive career includes work with musical icons worldwide, including American Idol's Jennifer Hudson, acclaimed gospel singer Ethel Holloway, the legendary Johnny Mathis, Grammy Award winning Clark Sisters, blues great KoKo Taylor, the extraordinary Melvin Taylor, and others. Keyboardist Mike Arnold and guitarist Frank Collazo have worked in Chicago's music scene for many years in the band New Day, and individually have performed with area bands such as American Breed, The Business, Powerplay, The Mauds, el Coco and others.
Paired with the sweet sound of Mike McGowan's natural tenor and stage presence and the powerhouse vocals of Jocelyn Winston & Teresa Beaver, they cover great American jazz and R&B classics of the 50s, Motown sounds of the 60s, the 70s disco era, and right into the 21st Century.
Together they have found a winning recipe and are now cookin' with soul! Make sure the dance floor stays full at your next event...Try a little Soul Cookin'!
