To those that know him, José "Bong" Peñera is "keyboard artistry personified." His lyrical solo piano playing has mesmerized habitués at countless swank nightclubs & hotels, from the Hyatt Regency along Wacker Drive in downtown Chicago to the Lake Barrington Shores Golf Club, as well as at the Woodfield Nordstrom, where José regularly performs during the daytime. For years, Peñera and his group "Batucad" (which translates to 'Beat' in Portuguese) dominated the Philippine music scene. With three albums of original composition, predominantly 'samba', and all best sellers, José was a star in his own right. Then there was the string of SRO concerts at the Thomas Jefferson Cultural Center, a concert with American jazz flutist Hubert Laws at Manila's premiere concert hall, a movie called "Sinta" (Beloved,) for which he arranged and supplied most of the music, plus numerous radio & TV appearances and interviews. From 1980-84, José was the highly popular solo pianist at the Royal Garden Hotel and at Hotel Intercontinental in Hong Kong. In 1985, The Aliw Foundation, which awards outstanding entertainers, gave the Best Jazz plum to José's group. But a talent so versatile and prolific could not refuse the call to greener pastures, so José vowed to conquer America, and there could be no better place to start than Chicago.
